One of Denmark’s biggest actresses, Tammi Øst, also has a huge singing talent and recorded the lyrical album “ØST”, released on Cowbell Music in April 2011.
On ØST she offers her musical take on poems from three of the biggest living authors in Denmark; Søren Ulrik Thomsen, Suzanne Brøgger and Anne Lise Marstrand-Jørgensen.
With her musical interpretations of the poems, Tammi Øst wishes to inspire the younger generation. She passes on her own key to poetry, – an understanding which first arrived later in her life.
“I didn’t grow up with paint exhibitions, poetry and that kind of higher culture, but I grew up with music, especially pop music. I’ve recitated poetry for people a number of times, and personally thought I understood it, but it was only when I out in rhythm and tone to the poems, that the words truly came alive. With the album I wanted to pass my joy for poetry on to people, so that they may want to read the original poems themselves some day,” she tells.
On ØST she has rewritten and put music to the poems of Søren Ulrik Thomsen and Anne Lise Marstrand-Jørgensen, and she has been inspired by the book ‘Jeg har set den gamle verden forsvinde- hvor er min ørenringe?’ by Suzanne Brøgger, who also sings blues on the album.
The style is minimalistic folk/experimental and Tammi Øst’s voice is backed up by Benjamin Koppel and Jesper Mechlenburg’s poetic and inciting arrangements. An album, you can immerse yourself into again and again.
The album contains a booklet with liner notes by Suzanne Brøgger, along with original and rewritten lyrics from the authors.
