RENOWNED MUSICIANS IN UNIQE SESSIONS
The growing festival has booked musicians such as Markus Stockhausen (D), Grammy nominated percussionist Tupac Mantilla (CO) and Scott Colley (US), the bassist of choice for such jazz legends as Herbie Hancock and Jim Hall.
John Blake Jr. (US), his son Johnathan Blake (US) along with Anders Koppel (DK) and Benjamin Koppel (DK) will perform with Ars Nova Copenhagen – one of the finest choir ensembles in Europe.
American saxophonist Joe Lovano will perform with Danish saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, both owners of the Mezzo Soprano Saxophone, developed by Koppel. This concert is a world-premiere of the musical meeting of the Mezzo Soprano Saxophones and their owners – joined by pianist Kenny Werner (USA), bass player Palle Danielsson (Sweden) and drummer Audun Kleive (Norway).
Also perfoming at this year’s festival ,from the golden age of Blue Note Records, are jazzlegends The Cookers: Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, George Cables, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart.
FAMOUS DANISH VOICES SING JAZZ
A vast number of great Danish vocalists are presented this year, including Erann DD, Maria Montell, Bobo Moreno, Marie Carmen Koppel, Katrine Madsen and Alberte Winding.
Also appearing are some of the best musicians and big bands within Danish jazz and classical music: Denmark’s best percussionist Marilyn Mazur, jazzpianist Jacob Anderskov and Danish drummer legend Alex Riel in the company of Ole Kock Hansen’s A Very Big Band, a giant in the history of Danish jazz and known for his collaborations with NHØP (Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen).
Denmark’s best DJ, DJ Noize, is featured at Betty Nansen Teatret along with classical concert pianist Katrine Gislinge and jazz saxophonist Benjamin Koppel. DJ Noize will mix the music and visualize it on a big-screen monitor.
Koppel twists the term jazz – presenting a wide range of music, including modern jazz, modernistic choir, vocal jazz and crooning, classic and electronica, chamber music and world music – all mentioned genres, mixed in great concerts featuring international and Danish artists, many of them meeting for the first time ever, in a unique Koppel-setting.
Koppel’s cross over take is consistent throughout the festival, developing the genre and presenting innovative musical meetings. Valby Summer Jazz has concerts for everyone and is a musical party for all ages.
